Andre Leon Talley fashion figure auctioned off at Christie’s in New York City

PARIS, Jan. 24 (Reuters) – Silk caftans, exotic leather coats and monogrammed Louis Vuitton luggage sets are among the items from the late American fashion journalist Andre Leon Talley up for auction this week at Christie’s in New York.

“He was a larger-than-life tour de force,” said Elizabeth Seigel, head of private and iconic collections at Christie’s New York, speaking at an exhibition in Paris, where several pieces were on display.

“His work can really make or break any designer,” adds Seigel.

Nearly 400 lots will be on sale from Friday to 16 February, illustrating Talley’s eccentricity, personal style and love of fashion, with images, photographs and clothing related to her friendships with other prominent industry figures, such as designers Karl Lagerfeld and Diane von Furstenberg and editor-in-chief longtime Vogue, Anna Wintour.

The auction house estimates the lot will sell for more than a million dollars, funds will go to the two Baptist churches that played a key role in Talley’s life.

Talley, former US Vogue editor and creative director, died on January 18, 2022, at the age of 73.

“She was Anna Wintour’s right-hand man, and she also paved the way for new generations of people to follow her, such as (editor-in-chief of British Vogue) Edward Enninful,” Seigel said, noting that she also served a guiding role for a new generation of designers and writers. .
