In 1972 Vivienne’s interests turned to biker clothing, zippers and leather. The shop was rebranded in skull and crossbones and renamed Too Fast to Live, Too Young to Die.
Between 1974 and 1976 Vivienne and McLaren ran a boutique called Sex. Then in 1981 Vivienne and Malcom had their first catwalk. They took ideas from different historical eras (especially the renaissance), having models wearing pirate-like garb and corsets, like those worn by royalty in the 1800s.
However, three years later Vivienne started working independently and was revered for her unique designs. Vivienne’s iconic style consists of slogan t-shirts, bubble skirts, bodice, tweed and tartan, very high platforms (Naomi Campbell famously wore 12-inch heels).
Her work continues to be admired by all for her creativity and uniqueness, holding an exhibition dedicated to her at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, in 2004. Two years later Elizabeth II made Vivienne Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Sher is also known for her statements on politics and world opinion, the most famous example of this being in 2014, when Vivienne shaved off all of her hair in protest of climate change.
