Niners Split Doubleheader, Down Davidson in Dramatic, 4-3, Fashion

CHARLOTTE, NC Charlotte’s men’s tennis team halved Saturday’s home double-leader, falling to South Georgia, 4-2, before beating Davidson, 4-3, in dramatic fashion on Saturday at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.

The win in the afternoon game, snapped CLT’s four-game losing streak and extended the Niners’ streak of wins over the Wildcats to seven and wins in 10 of the last 11 meetings.

Southern opened the match completely on the front foot, earning double points with a dominant 6-1 win in court three before his duo in court two struggled. Abhimanyu Vannemreddy And Bret Gloria6-4.

On the first court, the new tandem of sophomores Coy Simon and new students Matthias Iturbe Eagles beat Pol del Castillo and Aaron Williams, 6-2 to level the double points in a set apiece, before GSU took the lead, 1-0, into singles action.

In singles games, the Eagles quickly doubled their lead, taking a comprehensive 6-1, 6-2 victory in field three.

Left behind a pair, freshmen Aditya Narayan downed Judson Blair, 6-3, 7-5, in a field of two to cut the deficit in half.

A few minutes later, classmates Ivan Dreykopp beat Dimitiris Paliouras, 6-1, 7-6, won the second break set, 7-3, to level the score at 2-2.

Georgia Southern regained the lead with a straight sets win in a field of six, taking the lead, 3-2, with a pair of games still on the court and in the third set.

Needing every last set remaining, Vannemreddy lost back and forth in court two to earn a match point and a 4-2 win for GSU.

Davidson immediately got out on the front foot, dominating the double-pointers with a pair of quick three-and-one court wins in a row to take an early lead, 1-0, going into the singles game.

To start singles action, freshman Matthias Iturbe dominated Maxwell Kachkarov, 6-1, 6-2, on court three to level the score, 1-1.

A pair of straight sets wins in courts of six and two gave the Wildcats a lead, 3-1, and on the brink of match point.

Trailing in two of their remaining three games, the Niners began their comeback bid as Narayanan, who was trailing 5-0, in the second set, beat Juan Perez, 6-4, 7-5, to cut Davidson’s lead.

A few minutes later, Johnny Acostaequalized the score with a win, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, three sets over Nico Pinzon, leaving everything to the seniors, Abhimanyu Vannemreddy in field one.

Vannemreddy then answered the buzzer after dropping a set to win the last five games of his match to end the game, defeating Alejandro Solares, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 to snap CLT’s four-game losing streak and send the Niners into rapturous celebrations.

ADI FOUND A NEAR WAY BACK HALF A TYPE OF A TYPE

New students Aditya Narayan earned a pair of straight-set wins on Saturday, needing to come from behind in the second set to win, 7-5, and keep the Niners alive at 3-2.
