What does the champagne carpet mean for Oscar fashion

HOLLYWOOD — For the first time in over 60 years, the Oscars carpet isn’t red. The debate over the shade of the champagne rug has continued since Wednesday when it came to light – and so many people have weighed in online.

One fan even posted on Instagram, speaking for many, that “it’s not the Oscars without the Red Carpet.” Others on Twitter are concerned that the shade of champagne might look dirty at the end of the night. Others, however, disagreed — tweeting that red carpets are “so… old-fashioned and new carpets showcase fashion better!” Apparently, one expert agreed.

“I love the red carpet for its history and heritage and meaning. But a champagne color rug is better for fashion. It will actually accentuate the dress better,” said WWD Style Director Alex Badia.

Badia pointed out that the dress Oscar nominee Jamie Lee Curtis wore when he won the Screen Actor’s Guild would work better against a champagne-colored carpet.

“He looks amazing. And also the attitude, the way he has it, it’s everything I want,” said Badia.

Michelle Yeoh barely earned haute couture for her role in ‘Everything, Everywhere All At Once,’ but her performance on the awards circuit – that’s another story.

“Michelle Yeoh is now a fashion icon right before our eyes,” added Badia.

In the case of Angela Bassett – nearly 30 years separate her Oscar nominations.

“She’s redefining what the youthful approach to fashion and women in general is. I think we’ve seen a lot more about pushing boundaries about who, what age, doesn’t matter, you just have to feel competent and strong. And she’s really an example amazing,” Badia said.

One day these big stars might check out the name Amiera-Dior Traynham-Artis. He is a young entrepreneur from Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn in Los Angeles looking to give his Oscar nominations a kick.

“Anytime anyone sees my shoes…I can do that too,” said Traynham-Artis.

For 12-year-olds and for world-renowned designers, Oscar Sunday remains the most important fashion show.

“What we will see on the champagne color carpet on Sunday will have a global impact and therefore, a big moment for fashion. This is the biggest moment for fashion till today, the number one carpet in the world,” said Badia.
