Michigan Secures Top Ten Regular Season Title With Win Over No. 5 Illinois

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan’s #3-ranked men’s gymnastics team recorded its third straight Big Ten regular season title with a 411,250-405,550 win over No. 5 Illinois on Saturday (March 18) at Cliff Keen Arena.

Michigan (11-6, 3-1 Big Ten) won four games as a team with 68,050 on silent rings, 72,300 on vault, 68,250 on parallel bars and 68,250 on high bars.

Young David Wolma secured the win in the vault, matching his season high with 14.75. Classmate Evgeny Siminiuc scored a win on the parallel bars (14.75), while senior Adam Wooten wrapping up the win with an event-topping 14.30.

The Wolverines trailed by nearly four points after round two but took the lead for the first time in the afternoon in round five on the parallel bars. The regular season title was sealed with a high bar effort, outscoring the Illini by more than five points in kit to secure the win.

Compete without freshmen Fred Richard And Blixt Country and the reigning NCAA all-around champion Paul Juda, UM recorded a season best score of 411,250, surpassing its previous high of 410,400 (Oklahoma). The Wolverines also turned in the season’s best team score in the vault (72,300).

Michigan also took home four runners-up, with a senior Mark’s Scissors scored 14.40 on hitting the horse. Besides, juniors Javier Alfonso recorded a time of 14.30 on the still ring and Siminiuc took second place on the high bar with a time of 14.00. On the court, Wooten and Alfonso scored 14.20 for the second draw.

UM hit 24 of 30 routines (80 percent) and broke nine appearances in the afternoon.

With the regular season over, UM is looking to win its third straight Big Ten championship and 20th in program history. Wolverines will be the No. 1 seed 1, and will travel to Columbus, Ohio, for the postseason championships starting Friday (March 31) with team and all-around competitions, followed by the individual event finals the following day on Saturday (April 1). ).

Competition on both nights begins at 8 p.m. from the Covelli Center in Ohio State. The championship will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
