When they were alive, Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana were considered fashion icons.
The late king, who reigned for 70 years, had his own bold, elegant and colorful style. And her daughter-in-law wore many 80s and 90s stoppers from her iconic wedding gown to her Travolta gown to her revenge gown. Despite their very different styles, Diana decided to pay homage to the queen early on in her relationship with Charles, but the dress she wore was called risqué on the princess.

Paul Burrell, who was one of Queen Elizabeth’s personal footmen until he moved into Charles and Diana’s home in the ’80s, remembers the dress the princess wore and the reaction.
Speak on behalf LingoBurrell said: Prince of Wales [now King Charles]he still has official duties to perform and [Diana] did not engage in many engagement duties before they married except for a very famous one where she wore a black taffeta gown. She stepped out of the car a little too low and one could see her cleavage.
Burrell continued: The black taffeta dress was meant to be a tribute to the queen because when the queen was Princess Elizabeth, she wore a dress very similar to it and Diana thought it would be a nod to her future mother-in-law, which was, I think, ignored at the time. [The press] just thought that she was a bit bold with her bare shoulders and too much cleavage. The press was critical of this young girl from day one and it’s a shame because she’s just trying to find her way. He told me that I was pushed into a shark pool and I learned to swim very quickly.’
A trick Princess Diana later used to avoid showing too much cleavage
After the incident, Diana adopted a trick to make sure she didn’t get out of her dress and the paparazzi didn’t see too much of her when she got out of the car. He started to put the clutch bag in front of his chest as he got out of the vehicle.
Designer Anya Hindmarch, who worked with Diana for years after opening shop in the Chelsea neighborhood, revealed what the princess used to call her handbag.
He was a very loyal and very likable customer, Hindmarchtold Telegraph. He would come and see us without bodyguards or fuss. We used to laugh when we designed what she refers to as her cleavage bag, the little satin clutch that she would use to cover up her cleavage when she got out of the car.
