Rob McElhenney praised the ‘amazing’ Wrexham Women, who achieved promotion in dramatic fashion

Rob McElhenney couldn’t hide his delight as the Wrexham Women’s team celebrated promotion on Sunday.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star, who co-owns the club with fellow Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds, took to Twitter after his nail-biting climax against Briton Ferry.

Rebecca Pritchard scored the decisive goal with 15 minutes remaining to see the game finish 1-0.

The result means Wrexham Women have been promoted from the Adran Northern League and will thus be playing in the Adran Premier, the highest tier of women’s football in Wales, next season.

Women’s sporting support has grown exponentially in recent weeks and attendance records were broken last month when Wrexham Women faced the Connahs Quay Nomads.

With Reynolds and wife Blake Lively also in attendance, 9,511 people turned up at the Racecourse.

That saw the previous record easily beaten at 5,175, for the Cardiff City Women’s win over Abergavenny last October.

And the growing audience will now see the women play in the Adran Premier League from next season onwards.

They did so in dramatic fashion in the play-off final with only one goal to separate the two sides.

It was Prita who landed a heavy blow, who managed to get a cross from Rosie Hughes before Briton Ferry goalkeeper Courtney Young.

Hughes almost doubled the lead with minutes remaining in the game but his effort hit the crossbar.

And in the blink of an eye, Briton Ferry had hit back and only a superb stop from Wrexham keeper Delyth Morgan kept them from a superb equaliser.

At full time, there was wild celebration from fans and players alike, while the coaches collapsed as they embraced each other.

The men’s team is also looking good for promotion back to the EFL with Wrexham one point clear of second-placed Notts County with three games remaining. Phil Parkinson’s side also have a game in hand at County.
