Charlotte’s Season Ends With a 4-0 Decision vs. No. 59 FAU in the C-USA Quarterfinals

HOUSTON, Texas Charlotte’s men’s tennis team lost their quarterfinal match in the Conference USA Tournament to No. 59 FAU, 4-0, on Friday afternoon at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.

The result leveled the all-time series between the 49ers (9-14) and the Owls (13-10) with neither team having won back-to-back meetings in six total contests between programs.

The Owls took an early lead, following a closely contested double point. After getting a comprehensive opening set on court three, the Niners tandem from sophomores Coy Simon and new students Matthias Iturbe doubles game leveled by a set each, beating No. 83 Kevin Huempfner and Nicolas Acevedo, 6-4, in court one.

With the final result on field two, Joao Graca and Filip Krolo from FAU outperformed the senior players Abhimanyu Vannemreddy and freshman Adity Narayanan, 7-6(2) to give the Owls a 1-0 lead going into singles action.

In singles, FAU continued to step on the gas, quickly doubling, then quadrupling their lead, before finally taking match points in straight sets wins on courts one, three and five respectively.

Iturbe just won his second set, while Vannemreddy and sophomore Bret Gloria fought away when the game was finally stopped.

NEXT

The Niners will be going into the summer months to regroup for the 2023-24 season. CLT will kick off tournament play in September with a new double season starting right after the turn of the new year in 2024.
