The 2023 Met Gala – five wacky rules guests must adhere to at the fashion extravaganza

Celebrities will be busy getting ready for the 2023 Met Gala, with the big event just days away.

The star-studded red carpet promises to deliver glitzy, glam, and high-end outfits when fashion’s biggest night of the year returns Monday with the theme Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.

While the guests never fail to wow fans with their glamorous outfits, this high-profile event isn’t as wild a party as it seems.

In fact, there are some strict rules that guests must obey if they want to be invited back to the Met Gala.

From age restrictions to phone-free zones, here are five of the most unexpected rules in fashion extravaganzas.

There are no selfie rules

It may be hard to believe, but celebrities aren’t allowed to take photos of themselves to remember the special occasion.

In 2015, it was announced that the use of social media would be banned at the Met Gala to stop celebrities spending most of the night on their phones.

It is hoped that the rules will help people to attend the event.

A notice sent to guests that year read: “Use of mobile phones for photography and social media will not be permitted inside the gala.”

However, the no-selfie rule has been broken several times since then, including Kylie Jenner’s iconic bathroom selfie in 2017.

NO SMOKING

In 2003, a ban on indoor smoking in New York City in places such as office buildings, bars, and theaters was enacted by mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Despite this law being enacted, a number of celebrities were photographed smoking in the bathroom at the Metropolitan Museum of Art during the 2017 gala.

Stars seen breaking the rules include Bella Hadid, Dakota Johnson, and Marc Jacobs.

That same year, councilors and donors expressed their dismay over guests smoking at the Met Gala, with one saying it was “disrespectful to the art collection”.

The following year, guests were reminded that “smoking in the museum is illegal”, with an invitation that repeated the smoking ban.

Tight seating arrangements

Anna Wintour’s Met Gala was meticulously planned and she knew exactly where she wanted each guest to sit.

Seating plans start in December, and there are strict rules regarding who seats celebrities.

Vogue editors love making sure celebrities can meet new people on their shows so couples usually sit apart from one another.

In the 2016 documentary First Monday in the Month of May, special projects director at Vogue Sylvana Ward Durrett explains that a lot of “power brokering” went into the seating plan.

“A lot of thought about who was sitting next to who, if they were sitting together last year, if they were sitting next to each other at other events, so much has gone into it, it’s shocking,” she explains.

She added: “The point of these things is to meet new people, and to be interested in what other people are doing. What good is it if you come here to hang out with your husband?”

None under 18 years

In 2018, the Met Gala adopted new rules that under-18s are no longer allowed to attend.

The new restrictions meant many celebrities passed up invitations, including 16-year-old dancer Maddie Ziegler.

“I can’t go, because I’m not old enough,” she told The Hollywood Reporter in 2018, when asked if she would be on the red carpet.

A spokesperson for the Met Gala explained the decision to bar performers under 18, saying: “This is not an appropriate event for persons under 18.”

Food ban

After gracing the Met Gala red carpet, guests were treated to a formal dinner.

However, stars can’t just order whatever they want.

According to The New York Post, certain foods were left off the menu at Wintour’s own request.

A former Vogue employee says that parsley is on the list of prohibited foods to avoid the risk of getting stuck in guests’ teeth.

Other ingredients on the banned list include shallots and garlic to keep bad breath at bay.
