st. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — Surveys about dress code violations were sent out to families at five St. Petersburg schools. Johns County.

It’s from the Civil Rights Office and sent by mail. Jax Action News tells you in 2021 then opened an investigation into the district’s dress code policy and whether it discriminates on the basis of sex or not.

The survey relates to a federal Title IX investigation.

It’s a physical representation that they’re taking seriously in their investigation and it’s still ongoing, said Bartram Trail high school student Riley OKeefe. I hope it gives them directions on where to go so it’s not too broad.

Surveys were sent from the Civil Rights Office to five schools, Bartram Trail, Nease, St. Augustine, Switzerland Point, and Creekside.

OKeefe is a high school junior on Bartram Trail and one of 80 girls to have their 2021 yearbook photo edited at the school. He got the survey and thought it was thorough.

What is your dress code for the 2020-2021 school year? If you press yes, more questions arise, he says. You have the opportunity to choose whether it is a warning, whether it is a suspension, what are the consequences?

OKeefe says as far as the Bartram Trail goes, dress code enforcement isn’t as extreme as it was two years ago, but says he’d like to see more of the district in the future.

Being a normal student is not stressful, I can focus on my homework as usual, he said. The school environment is getting better, at least in my school, I just feel the school is not very proactive… only handles what is given to them.

St. Johns County sent Action News Jax the following statement:

We fully cooperate with the investigation. We have changed the dress code since the initial complaint was filed in 2021. This change supports a gender neutral dress code and was created based on public and school board input, research in other districts, and school board workshop topics. The changes also include training for staff responsible for enforcing the dress code.
