Thanks to a popular saying, most people in New York expect rain in April. Almost predictably: confusion over how to dress in the transitional weeks of spring, when temperatures can go from cold to warm to hot, sometimes in a single day.
The fashion on the streets over the last few weeks has gone all over the place. People in winter coats stood next to people in shorts. The most obvious sign of spring is probably that, with lots of clothes, there are umbrellas.
But there are other fashion cues that signal warmer days are coming. Beige and white are becoming more common colors than gray and black. Bare shoulders share the street with many oversized blazers.
Most people seem to follow few if any rules when it comes to dressing, except to deal with the unpredictable seasons. As one hiker in SoHo put it, It’ll be fun for two weeks, and then we’ll be killed by the summer heat.
