Florida school board member weighs ‘furry clothes’ at school board meeting: ‘It’s inappropriate’

Florida school board members are considering whether children should be able to wear “fur clothing” during a dress code policy meeting on Tuesday.

Megan Wright, Brevard Public Schools board member, said “furry clothing” was a “common thread” on student surveys of dress codes.

“One of the first things was, believe it or not, and I can’t believe I have to say this out loud, but the furry clothes, that came up in that thread, I don’t even know how many times,” Wright began. “Referring to the dog’s collar, referring to the tail, referring to the ear that the student is wearing.”

Another school board member, Kayte Campbell, said that while she wasn’t a fan of the furry move, the headbands with ears were different from students wearing “tails.”

“I’m not a fan of furry gestures, but at the same time, if ears mean a headband with pointy ears, that’s a hair accessory. So you know, different tails and students meowing and barking at other students, that’s not cool, but it’s not code get dressed,” Campbell said.

Matt Susin, chairman of the school board, said that furry clothing should not be accepted at school.

“I try to find ways that are not acceptable at all costs, because what it does is, they then bark and all these other weird things,” said Susin.

He added that a “majority of the council” appeared to believe that furry clothing should be considered an inappropriate dress code.

“Here’s the bottom line: It’s inappropriate, like the exploiting of behavior in schools, and we just need to end it,” he continued.

“This is not rocket science, and this is not an epidemic, if you don’t want tails in children just say no tails, this is ridiculous,” he said. “This conversation about furries is crazy and a culture war conversation,” he added, arguing that “barking” has nothing to do with furries.

“If you guys are following the trend, this is a weird and ridiculous thing kids in high school do, all kids, barking and meowing at each other,” he continued. “It’s weird but they do it. It has nothing to do with a child wearing a tail. Unfortunately, all children. Talk to your high school teacher, they will tell you. We are too complicated, you don’t want them wearing tails, say no tail.”

Director of Student Services Christopher Reed suggested adding “clothing that mimics non-human characteristics” to the policy.
