DURHAM Duke track and field sophomore Megan McGinnis has been named the PNC Achievers Student-Athlete of the Week after a pair of record-breaking performances en route to helping the Duke women capture the ACC Outdoor Championship last weekend in Raleigh, NC
The Blue Devils won their second ACC Outdoor Championship, and first straight title in the last three seasons, in dominating fashion as the squad totaled 145.5 points, 61 more than runners-up Virginia Tech. The 145.5 points scored by Duke in this year’s ACC Women’s Championship were the most since the ACC expanded to 15 teams in 2014, breaking Florida State’s previous record of 134 in 2019.
McGinnis won a pair of medals in the 200m and 400m – doing so in record-breaking fashion. After winning the indoor title in February, McGinnis completed a sweep of the season by finishing first in the outdoor 400m. Sophomore clocked a personal best of 51.43 seconds to claim the gold medal and first team honors, while breaking the school record in the process. Her time beat the previous record set by Brittany Aveni in 2021 and is currently 16th nationally.
The Roanoke, Va., product also captured a silver medal and All-ACC First Team honors in the women’s 200m after posting another personal best. McGinnis shot 22.99 seconds just 0.03 off the school record to finish runner up and place himself as No. 2 all time in program knowledge.
Several Blue Devils await their fate in the qualifiers for the NCAA East Regional, which will take place in Jacksonville, Florida, from May 24-27. The NCAA Outdoor Championships will take place from June 7-10 in Austin, Texas.
