Natalie Portman Recreates a Junon Dior Dress at Cannes

Natalie Portman is the perfect person to recreate one of Dior’s most famous designs at the Cannes Film Festival. On May 20, the actor walked the red carpet in a strapless gown inspired by the iconic Dior gown originally released 74 years ago. Reimagined by the fashion house’s current creative director, Maria Grazia Chiuri, Portman’s version features a white sequin bodice and a layered skirt covered in midnight blue trim. Styled by Ryan Hastings, she accessorized the show number with Chopard diamond earrings and silver eyeshadow for the premiere of her film “May December.”

Christian Dior originally created the dress for their fall 1949 collection, naming it “Junon” in reference to the Roman goddess, Juno (along with brother’s clothes he said “Venus”). While the original design is kept in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, according to British Vogueher inspiration is seen in the dark blue sheen that lines her skirt, almost resembling peacock petals or feathers, for which Juno is known.

Other celebrities have worn Junon gowns over the years, incl Miley Cyrus, who attended the 2009 Oscars in a similar sleeveless gown with a deep V-neckline. But Portman just might be the closest copy of the original. “This is so beautifully done I’m speechless,” one Twitter user write, while another fan expressed gratitude that Portman wore the re-creation instead of risking damage to the historic original.
