Check out the teams making the first cut in the 2023 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. After 54 holes of stroke play, the 30-team field in the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship is now 15 (well, 16; more on that in a moment) after Sunday night’s cut.

Illinois is in front after a second straight under-par run, sitting at 6 under. Pepperdine, after breaking Grayhawk’s record on Sunday, moved up to second and three strokes behind.

Then there were Florida, North Carolina and Georgia Tech all within three shots of each other before the big drop to Stanford, who had the second-lowest round on Sunday, in sixth.

And Monday morning, there will be a playoff for final place. That’s why we didn’t get to the 15 that would officially go forward.

On Monday night, the top eight teams remaining after the final round of stroke play will go into match play, which starts Tuesday morning.

Meet the team that made the first cut at Grayhawk.

It’s hard to imagine Illinois being in a better position to make a match play. The Illini have played nearly flawlessly for the first three days. Being well ahead of the eight-team cut-line (currently 13 over), it would be hard to imagine not seeing Illinois make a match play. Adrien Dumont de Chassart (4 under), Jackson Buchanan (3 under) and Tommy Kuhl (2 under) led the way.

The tide hit Grayhawk on Sunday, with Pepperdine going 11-under 269 to move up three places and position himself to make the game for the third straight year at Grayhawk. Pepperdine won the title in 2021 and reached the semifinals last year, however, it would come as no surprise to see Waves competing again on Wednesday.

Florida played in the morning wave during the third round for the first time, and the Gators continued their strong play as the day before, shooting 2 under on Sunday and putting themselves in a great position to take match play. Fred Biondi is third at 4 under, with John DuBois and Ricky Castillo sitting at 1 under.

The Tar Heels caused some concern when they missed ACC game play last month, but they are strong at the Grayhawks, shooting 5-under 275 on Sunday and playing in a main group with Illinois and Florida. Dylan Menante, a transfer from Pepperdine, is second at 5 under, and North Carolina has made solid contributions across his ranks.

The 18-hole leaders have been consistent this week, and that starts with Ross Steelman, who has shot sub-60 rounds daily and leads four rounds in the individual competition at 9-under 201. The Yellow Jackets are similar to the four teams ahead of them that if they play another solid round on Monday morning, it’s almost certain they’ll make a match play.

This is where the leaderboards start to get interesting. The top five teams have separated themselves, but Stanford is speeding up the pace that will struggle to make up for the eight-team reduction come Monday. Stanford shot 6-under 274 on Sunday, which was the second-best round of the day, moving up seven spots. Barclay Brown opened with a bogey and then made four birdies, signing 3-under 67.

The hosts have been improving on a daily basis after a disappointing 11-over performance on Friday, shooting 1 over on Saturday and 1 under on Sunday. Arizona State made the finals last year, and will likely want to try to get back into game play to finish what it couldn’t last year. Michael Mjaaseth shot 4 under in the third overtime to lead the Sun Devils.

While the top seven teams shot under par on Sunday, Florida State started the string of those over par. The Seminoles finished 2nd for the day, their best run of the week, and tied with top-ranked Vanderbilt for last place. If Sunday is the last day, they will make a playoff for the final spot. However, there is plenty of time left to secure a place in the match play.

Seeing Vanderbilt in this position may come as a surprise to some, but the Commodore hasn’t been able to put it all together this week. Still, they had a good chance of playing the match again. Cole Sherwood shot 1 over on Sunday but set the team at 1 over for the tournament. William Moll was under 2 in the third round. Gordon Sargent, the defending individual champion, 7 over.

It may come as a surprise to some, but Virginia is a perfect fit to earn a place to play Monday’s game. Freshman Ben James, who has won five times this season, is in the bottom 2 and in the top 10. Fellow freshman Bryan Lee is in the Top 3, with two young players leading the way. However, the Cavaliers will need more help with the problem.

Early in the third round, Auburn looked in danger of finishing closer to the cut, but the Tigers played well and had an easy afternoon in the number. However, from Monday three shots back will be a challenge. Reed Lotter shot 3 under on Sunday and needs to continue his momentum on Monday.

Texas A&M needed heroism to even make the NCAA Championship, and now they must find another miracle to make match plays. Sam Bennett, the 2022 US Amateur champion and low amateur at the 2023 Masters, hasn’t had his best week (10 over) but Daniel Rodrigues is in the under 2 and in the top 10 leading.

A few late bogeys hurt the Crimson Tide, but Alabama was easily inside the secant and could rest in peace Sunday afternoon. However, compared to the teams before it, Alabama has many opportunities to improve on Monday. Alabama made the final game in 2018 but hasn’t made a game since.

In short, Georgia is being held on Sunday, and it’s off the cut line for most of the afternoon. It wasn’t until after the team made a switch that the Bulldogs finally came to the cut-line, and 24 over was good enough to play on Monday. However, they are still alive and have to go down to make a match play.

Well, the 15th team has not yet been decided and will be decided on Monday morning. Ohio State’s Neal Shipley bogeyed the final hole after three straight birdies to tie the Buckeyes and Red Raiders, so at 11 a.m. ET (8 a.m. PT) the team will play a five-hole aggregate playoff at No. 14-18 to determine the final berth in Monday’s stroke play final.
