For many teenagers (that’s pre-teen, to the uninitiated, appealing to kids between the ages of about seven and 12), buying any kind of clothing is a minefield. Traditional children’s clothing feels too young, but adult clothing is too adult. This gap in the market is severely underserved by roads.
John Lewis has just launched a new Funwear range, targeting the twelve year old market and striking a nice balance between fun and cool that doesn’t feel too youthful. Department store chain-to-market research found that 53 percent of parents have bought something their child rejected, and 76 percent say their child’s friends are the biggest influence in their wardrobe.
Harper, like most kids her age, probably enjoyed the opportunity to get creative with her wardrobe, and it was a great outlet for bonding with her mom. This is the time for it; we use fashion to express our personality, it can and should be fun.
