FE News | UPCYCLED FASHION BECOME THE CENTER OF CREATIVE ARTS STUDENT PERFORMANCES

The fashion student has revealed a collection of recycled clothing based on scraps picked up as part of a junk couture project to help homeless charities Emmaus Leicestershire & Rutland.

Their project was presented at a fashion show in North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire CollegeThe Hinckley campus where creative arts students showcase their work during a week-long series of events to mark the end of the academic year.

Emmaus Leicestershire & Rutland, based in Hinckley, provides home, support and meaningful work for up to 16 people who have experienced homelessness and social exclusion. First-year fashion students were invited by Emmaus to help them sort and select donated clothing at the Hinckley-based charity shop Emporium in Stockwell Head with the understanding that they could take any item for recycling in exchange for a charitable donation.

Creative arts tutor Joanne Hall says,

We thank Emmaus for this opportunity which has opened students’ eyes to the possibilities of high street charity shops. They have worked hard to recycle new clothing items from a variety of materials including a pair of drapes and some leather biker pants that a student had turned into a skirt, top and jacket! The students were so impressed with what they found, they worked together to raise 70 donations for Emmaus.

The creative arts performance marks the culmination of two years of hard work for college seniors exhibiting their work in art and design, fashion and textiles, game design, graphic design, journalism, interior design, performing arts, photography and visuals. media. Art and media students have collaborated in an exhibition to display their works with the theme of Empowerment.

Dawn Wright, Emmaus Leicestershire & Rutland Director said,

We are very happy to be working together on this project. Our charity thanks the students for their amazing fundraising thus far, and we are excited to attend the fashion show to see first-hand how their creativity and recycling talents have transformed the pieces they source from our Emporium charity shop.

Carrie-Anne Abdulai, Assistant Principal for Higher and Adult Education at NWSLC said,

This show is an important milestone as we celebrate all the hard work and dedication of our staff and students this year. This provides a great opportunity for us to showcase their achievements and see first-hand the high standard of work students produce at our creative arts campus in Hinckley. The experience of our fashion students has taught us to appreciate the inspiration inherent in our local community and what can be achieved if we collaborate with a local organization like Emmaus. We love opening our doors and allowing students to share their work online giving them the opportunity to celebrate their creativity and recognize their achievements.
