We catch an American fashion designer who puts the country style scene center stage, taken from Wallpaper* August 2023 – a celebration of creative stars of all stripes across the US.
In addition to a series of images by New York and London based photographer Davey Adésida, the designers behind Commission, Willy Chavarria, Bode, Christopher John Rogers and Area tell us what it’s like to be a designer living and working in America today .

Commission
Formed in 2018, Dylan Cao and Jin Kay’s Commission have built a loyal following of subversive soft collections featuring corporate wear, 1990s sportswear, and vintage Americana. The label presents its tenth collection of the year, a play on the New York archetypes seen around the Times Square studios.

Emily Adams’ Bode Aujla celebrates intimate American stories, forging a design language rooted in the family’s craft history. The latest addition to Bode’s growing empire is womenswear, crossing eras in its inspiration and blending homespun techniques with moments of jewelery and luxury.

Area
Founded by Piotrek Panszczyk and Beckett Fogg in 2014, the New York Area label is known for its 1980s poppy motif. The duo’s designs have become a popular choice for celebrities seeking outré outfits – from Michelle Obama to Beyoncé – with their latest collection featuring surreal designs that evoke bananas and watermelons.

Christopher John Rogers
Born and raised in Baton Rouge, and a graduate of Savannah College of Art and Design, Rogers is perhaps best known for dressing US vice president Kamala Harris in a purple coat and matching dress for her 2021 inauguration. The vibrant swathes of color have become a trademark. the designer, who deals with bold, feminine silhouettes that he hopes encourage the wearer to ‘take up space’.

Willy Chavarria
The son of a Mexican immigrant, California-born Chavarria worked for various US fashion brands before starting his eponymous label in 2015. the thrift and elegance of ecclesiastical clothing.
