I was born in the early 90’s and reached the peak of awkwardness in the early to mid 2000’s which means I have participated in a Lots Horrible fashion trends. Fake tattoo necklace? Check. A big Baby-G watch that fills my 9 year old arms all over? Check. Chunky black platform sandals with mesh top support that tween can’t fit in? Check. And yes, even scrunchies of all varieties. The difference is that now, in my early 30s, I’m once again using scrunchies.
Thanks in part to the rapid increase in popularity and quality, it seems impossible to avoid scrunchies. I see it at the checkout counter or front and center in a display case. I was half expecting a free scrunchie with the purchase, or at least, a combo of a matching scrunchie and face mask. They often come with cute ribbons or bows.
More importantly, the elasticity didn’t give me a headache three minutes after wearing it. As I can see my hair is growing into broken bundle, I am very sensitive to how the strands are held together at any time of the day. The elastic band felt like it was tearing each strand, so to avoid damage, I switched to scrunchies. And finally, when my hair went days without washing, scrunchies seemed to add a bit of pizazz to the old bedhead.
So, scrunchies are back, a lot Carrie Bradshaw disappointed. I will always think of the time Carrie lashed out at her boyfriend’s mediocre novel, which ended in a fight and the ensuing breakup: You have your leading lady walking all over town wearing a belt. A SCRUUUUNCHIE! While I would never side with Burgers, I have to admit that scrunchies are back and better than ever.
