How Princess Diana’s Care for Nature Informed Her Outfit Choices

From rare toilets to Queen Elizabeth’s 1937 coronation gown to Princess Diana’s iconic wedding gown, the exhibition Royal Style in the Making, currently on display at Kensington Palace, is filled with some of the most famous royal fashions.

But, after sitting down with the collection curator, Matthew Storey, We Weekly learn that one of the most important items comes in the form of a sketch. The picture depicts the Princess of Wales’ favorite dress.

She calls it her grooming gown. It’s a blue dress with bright flowers on it and it’s one of the princess’s favorite dresses, Storey exclusively says We Weekly. He wore it again and again. So much so that the press said, “Get some rest. Stop wearing it.

Unfortunately, the royals insist on wearing the dress over and over again and for a very sweet reason.

She knows that children really appreciate this dress. Children love bright colors. So, he often wears it when going to visit children and sick children in particular, he explained.

Now, if you look at Diana’s past photos and compare them to the sketches, there is one major difference.

The sketch shows this wide-brimmed hat and he would never wear it [the dress] with a hat. He said you can’t hug a child with a hat, said Storey We about the ultimate princess approach to fashion.

She continues: For me, it opened up my understanding of Diana’s wardrobe. She thinks of the people she will meet and the people she will meet when she makes her style choices.

Choosing colors and patterns for certain occasions has actually been part of the royal dress style for some time. In fact, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother took a similar note when visiting families who had been bombed out of their homes during the Second World War.

We show the sketch that Norman Hartnell made for the Queen Mother and in this very sympathetic purple because the Queen Mother knows her appearance matters, Storey explains.

She adds: She wears soft, sympathetic colors. He will not wear black clothes. She wouldn’t wear green to an event like that because it was bad luck. That’s a bit of a revelation because what we think of as fairly modern royal dress ideas has a very long history.
