This week, explore the sneakers’ long-term potential and take a closer look at Bloomingdale’s new store concept.
The pandemic gave women the green light to wear more comfortable shoes.
That’s probably the biggest long-term impact of the past year and a half on fashion. High heels run the risk of becoming a relic of SM fashion (before Covid-19), considered the same way we think stockings: Why do we do that to ourselves? The sudden change in culture has proven the potential for such a shift. During World War II, women went to work and started wearing pants. In 2020, women stopped going to the office and began to prioritize comfort while working at home. Now, female consumers are driving a new era of footwear by buying more sneakers, along with other shoes easy flat style. And brands and retailers are increasingly driving demand with new products and merchandise foci.
If the recent runway is any indication of the direction of fashion, it is mostly buzzy move to comfort will be consolidated on the woman’s leg. On the resort’s 2022 runway last month, Dior showed off her dress-worthy sneakers on the red carpet. And at this week’s fall 2021 couture event, Jean Paul Gaultiers’ final gown was paired with the brand newly launched sneakers, created in collaboration with Nike and Sacai.
A line of women’s fashion brands have released sneakers for the first time, including Anine Bing on June 29. The 90s-inspired dad’s sneaker brand was ridiculed on its social channels and ecommerce sites, and saw a 50% higher opt-in for launch notifications sent via email, compared to previously launched styles across categories, says Olivia Gentin, COO at Anine Bing. Other brands have recently returned to the category, including Isabel Marant, with a new iteration of her cult favorite heeled style, and Staud launched the third New Balance collaboration. On June 30, Acne Studios released a shiny $700 version of $ 08STLHM stylish sneakers for women.
Sticking the word Sport to a fashion brand name is the ticket to enter the active wear category. Since January, Anine Bing, Solid & Striped and Parade are some of the brands that have gone there, following in the footsteps of Tory Burch and Adam Selman. Customers’ supplies for every aspect of their lives are usually cited as reasons for expansion.
As sneakers are increasingly considered part of the ubiquitous uniform, it’s no surprise that some of these brands (Tory Burch Sport, Anine Bing Sport, Solid & Striped via collaboration) have introduced them. And it makes sense that, because more and more fashion workers leave back to their office, fewer will find it necessary to maintain collection under the table of high heels.
We’ve styled our shoes [in marketing] with everything from evening gowns and suits to casual sweat suits, says Wayne Kulkin, CEO of 7-year-old Italian sneaker brand P448.
The beauty of sneakers is how versatile they are, says Moses Rashid, founder and CEO of UK-based sneaker and streetwear resale site The Edit LDN. If you are a woman wearing a dress and a pair [Nike] Dunks today, you look as cool as a guy in jeans in style.
She says women’s attitudes about sneakers have changed since the launch of Off-White, as well as a landmark 2017 runway show that featured the Louis Vuittons Supreme collaboration. Now, the trend of exiting Covid and returning to work is centered around convenience, he said, predicting that current priorities will further strengthen the market’s trajectory.
Obviously, there is interest. A TikToker using Yoel (@nyc.yoel) has gained over 380,000 followers by posting almost exclusively about women’s sneakers since January. A March post in which she asked, Guys, get these Jordans for your boyfriend, had 6 million views.
The name Edit LDNs is the result of The Edit Man Londons rebranding, motivated by the booming women’s business, which was announced in May. In March 2021, female shoppers surpassed 50% of the total customer base for the first time. Its core shopper base is 25 to 35 years old, and Yeezy, Jordan, Louis Vuitton, and Off-White are among the most purchased brands. Last year, the bestsellers were the Off-White x Air Jordan sneakers, which launched as a women’s style.
Rashid says women buy more shoes but more affordable styles, compared to male shoppers of The Edit LDNs. Most of their purchases are below 300, or $413. They are used to buying bags that cost up to 5,000. Now that they want to buy Jordan Mid, it’s okay for them to buy it.
On the same note, GOAT .’s chief brand officer Sen Sugano told Glossy in February that the company’s fastest-growing demographics of shoppers were women and international shoppers, and that its female audience was growing twice as fast as men. Today, 40% the customers are women.
There is huge growth in the women’s sneaker fashion arena, Kulkin said. To date, 84% of 2021 brand sales will be for women in the US
The sneaker brand has evolved from pink and shrink mindset to serve women; many are now simply expanding the size range of their styles to fit smaller women’s feet. In response, Olympian Allyson Felix, who left the Nike partnership in 2019, launched a shoe company in June that caters to underserved women by designing shoes.
But the world’s shoe giants are also working to be more inclusive. We’re talking about the rise of women’s sneakerheads, and brands are helping to elevate that, says Rashid, pointing to the brand’s recent collaborations with women including Nike with stylists and models. Aleali May. Even if it’s the same shoes [as the mens version] that they sell to women, having a W on the box makes all the difference to the shopper. They wanted Hypebae, not Hypebeasts.
The dominant look for women’s sneakers, as in the men’s market, is chunky, with thick sole. But overall, it can be said that the category increase is not a trend.
According to Gentin, the new Anine Bings sneaker fits the brand well for its versatility and timelessness. Despite being part of the collection of the Sport brand, the brand shows its style with ready-to-wear clothes more than half the time, he says.
In the past 18 months, many brands have seen a wild shift in what their customers are looking for and buying. We have more stability because we talk to one particular end user and we don’t follow trends, he said. Our customers know that what shells find in our offerings are shell pieces that are worn day and night and continue to be loved over time — not just for a moment.
Gentin said that Anine Bing is focused on creating meaningful business across categories, and plans to launch more sneakers styles within this year.
5 questions about Bloomies, with Bloomingdales
On Wednesday, Bloomingdales announced that the first location of its new concept store, dubbed Bloomies, will open on August 26 in Fairfax, Virginia. The shop is set to be much smaller than the Bloomingales store, in 22,000 square feet, and will feature a highly curated and growing selection of products. Bells and whistles such as tech stylist services and restaurants will also be included. Denise Magid, Bloomingdales evp and gmm ready-to-wear, center core, concession and outlet, shared with Glossy what buyers can expect from the concept.
Is this the future of Bloomingdale?
“Bloomies is one component of our commitment to our physical store experience. The assortment and experience has been built to complement our larger Bloomingdales market and store within. It also gives us the opportunity to have a laboratory for learning and experimentation.”
Are you targeting new customers with a new store concept?
“We have two strong Bloomingdales stores and a vibrant online business, so Bloomies is entering a market where customers know our brand. This will attract new customers, but also engage our existing loyal customers with a shopping experience that offers [everything] they already love, [but] in a smaller, even more convenient location.”
What is the merchandising strategy?
“Our approach to Bloomies is unlike any of our other stores. Our team curates the assortment based on the nature of the contemporary and casual concept, the latest fashions of the season, and the local lifestyle of the customer. We are very strategic in choosing the right category and brand [which will include Ganni, Staud and Cult Gaia], some of which are new to the market and some of which are new to Bloomingdales as a whole. That means different options across price points, from trend-driven denim to designer shoes to luxury fragrances and skincare.”
What are consumers’ expectations of the retailers they support?
“Customers want to be inspired, and Bloomies lives up to this expectation with a distinct combination of fashion and beauty curation, convenient service, and ongoing events and activations, all in an approachable environment. This store is designed to create a sense of discovery and be a part of our community and customers’ daily routines. You can explore the latest trends, sample at the Colada Shop, check out new collections from your favorite designers, or work with a stylist to revamp your wardrobe.”
How will the pandemic tell this store model, if any?
“Bloomies are designed to be more casual, more comfortable and something that fits into your everyday life. And, Bloomies offers a range of services that cater to our customers’ lifestyles, whether they want to buy online for convenient in-store pick up, drop off or pick up clothes for a night out.”
