Sorry Jeff Bezos, the spacesuit didn’t do it for us

Prior to takeoff, which took place in Van Horn, Texas, Bezos shared an official image of the crew in specially designed flight suits. The cobalt colored jumpsuits come in a high gloss shimmer, have an unattractive squidgy feel and look to them and each carries the initials and surname of each crew member in white letters across the chest. Elsewhere, the Blue Origin name is on the left arm and the American flag on the other is for Bezos, his brother and Funk, while the Dutch flag is for Daemen. And even though the suits were expertly designed for the mission, they really didn’t do much for us in style stakes. What’s more, Bezos made the cheeky decision to pair his own suit with a pair of suede boots. said Nuf.

For historic moments like these, and especially those overseen by the world’s richest man, we want more: we want clothes that, fashionably, lift us out of our chairs and send us straight into the stratosphere. We wanted something similar to the sleek yet functional suit worn by Anne Hathaway, Matthew McConaughey et al in Interstellar, or even the flashy orange suit seen in the 1998 sci-fi film Armageddon. In contrast, Bezos’ suits are nothing short of inspiring and definitely haven’t earned their place in suborbital space.
