This reliance on fiber prompted icebreakers to develop long-term relationships with merino growers, way ahead of many competitors. This gives the brand a consistent supply of merino fiber, while a 10-year contract provides farmers with stability and security. Working together “created the world’s first platform for progressive agriculture at 55 stations in New Zealand,” said the icebreaker.
Going forward, Icebreaker wants to make all of its clothing from wool and vegetable fibers by 2023. That means eliminating or looking for alternatives to the small fraction of synthetics used in its clothing. In addition, the brand has committed to shifting to regenerative practices through through ZQRx program program with Allbirds, Smartwool and NZ Merino.
