INWOOD, NY Anger is mounting over the decision of sports bar El Jefe NYC Inwood to announce a new dress code policy banning “athletic wear”, “slack clothing”, “white t-shirts” and “exposed jewelry”.
The bar at 186 Dyckman Street made the announcement Wednesday on Instagram, three days after two women shot outside the bar over the weekend.
“We encourage trendy and chic clothing. We reserve the right to refuse disobedient guests,” wrote El Jefe’s Instagram.
The reaction to the dress code announcement came immediately after more than 200 people commented on the post on the last day.
El Jefe NYC did not immediately respond to Patch’s request for comment.
Some of the comments focused on the oddity of banning sportswear in sports bars, “What kind of sports bar doesn’t allow sportswear … good work … good work,” one person wrote. Another commenter chimed in, “If you thought I’d be wearing a suit and tie to Dyckman, you’re in Angel Dust.”
No comment got more likes than, “Damn, we have to dress like Aventura to watch the game?” which is a reference to the always stylish Dominican-American bachata group.
However, many other comments focused on the alleged “racist” undertones of the new dress code.
“This looks very anti-Black,” one person commented. “How can you not wear your own jewelry?”
El Jefe’s post didn’t explain what “open jewellery” meant, which left people wondering if they should take off their wedding rings before entering the bar.
“Sounds very racist. How are you guys still open,” wrote another.
