How to protect yourself from mosquito bites
- Dress in long sleeves, pants outside: For extra protection, spray thin clothing with repellant.
- DEET: Make sure this ingredient is in your insect repellant.
- To drain standing water in your backyard and neighborhood: Mosquitoes can thrive in any standing water for more than three days.
It has been recommended in the past that to avoid mosquito bites, you should avoid being outdoors for Dusk and Dawn (the 4 D’s). While this is true for mosquitoes which are generally carriers of West Nile virus, other types of mosquitoes more likely to carry Zika, dengue, and chikungunya are active during the day. When you are outdoors, regardless of the time of day, adjust your dress accordingly and wear insect repellant that contains DEET, picaridin, or lemon eucalyptus oil as your first line of defense against pests.
