New cases of local viruses, the state recovers from the Indooroopilly cluster

Queensland recorded no new locally acquired Covid-19 cases on Sunday as the state continues to recover from the Indooroopilly cluster.

Prime Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk said it was an “absolutely perfect way to start on a Sunday”, but warned that cases could still emerge from the Indooroopilly cluster.

“We’re not out of the woods yet, so if you have symptoms, even mild ones, please go for a test, it’s absolutely essential,” she said.

A new case was recorded Sunday in quarantine at the hotel.

Deputy Chief Health Officer James Smith said the man, in his 20s, had arrived from Iran via Dubai and tested positive on the first day of quarantine at the hotel.

“We expect there to be more cases as we move forward,” he said.

“The fact that we don’t have any new cases today certainly means it’s encouraging and that we are moving in the right direction.”

It comes as Queensland Health Director Jeannette Young tightened border zone rules overnight as a statewide NSW lockdown was enforced.

Residents of the NSW border area can now only enter Queensland to obtain essential goods and services that cannot reasonably be obtained in NSW.

“The situation in New South Wales continues to be of great concern,” said Dr Young.

“With escalating local restrictions, we have no choice but to put in place a tighter border situation to protect the Queenslanders.

“This means that anyone who has visited any of the North New South Wales local government areas in our established border area can only enter Queensland for really essential reasons.

“This is the same restriction we have in place for the seven local government areas of Ballina, Brewarrina, Bourke, Byron, Walgett, Lismore and Richmond Valley.

“The reasons for crossing the border to Queensland for work will be limited to essential work. If it is not absolutely essential, do not cross the border.

Dr Young also urged Queenslanders to reconsider their need to visit New South Wales.

There are still 6,176 people in home quarantine statewide.
