Oregon shows 53% increase in weekly coronavirus cases in record period

The Oregon Health Authority on Monday announced 4,396 new cases of coronavirus in the previous three days, bringing the weekly total to a pandemic record.

Oregon has reported 12,740 cases in the past week, an average of 1,820 per day, setting a new record. The cases are up 53% from the previous week, marking the sixth straight week of gains.

In July, the Oregon Health Authority stopped reporting cases on weekends, resulting in high three-day totals reported on Monday. The new cases included 2,027 for Friday, 1,533 Saturday and 836 Sunday.

Hospitalizations also climbed over the weekend, although the trajectory has slowed. Oregon has reported that 752 people with COVID-19 are hospitalized, up 19 since the last public report. The number of people in intensive care stands at 206, up 21 from Friday’s figures.

It’s too early to tell if this slower growth will continue, and some metrics suggest it won’t, as hospitalizations typically lag behind new positive cases.

The state’s testing positivity rate for cases reported on Monday is alarmingly high at 13.6%, exceeding the daily rates reported last week.

Meanwhile, the state’s previous record for weekly cases was 10,355, set for the week ending December 6.

Vaccines:

Oregon reported 3,013 newly administered doses, including 751 on Sunday and the remainder of the preceding days.

The 2,937th death is a 27-year-old Douglas County woman who tested positive on August 6 and died Auh. 14 at Mercy Medical Center.

Oregon’s 2,938th death is a 79-year-old man from Douglas County who tested positive on July 29 and died on August 12 at Mercy Medical Center.

The 2,939th death is an 80-year-old woman from Crook County who tested positive on August 6 and died on August 12 at her residence.

The 2,940th death in Oregon is a 69-year-old woman from Coos County who tested positive on August 3 and died on August 11 in a location still under confirmation.

The 2,941st death is a 90-year-old Jackson County woman who tested positive on July 27 and died on August 11 at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center.

Oregon’s 2,942nd death is an 88-year-old Jackson County man who tested positive on July 13 and died on August 13 at his residence.

The 2,943rd death is a 69-year-old man from Lane County who tested positive on July 30 and died on August 12 at his residence.
