Los Angeles County reported 2,781 new COVID-19 cases and 10 more deaths today, although health officials said the number of cases and deaths may reflect delays in reporting over the weekend. end.
In mild good news, the number of coronavirus patients in county hospitals fell for the fourth day in a row, from 1,746 on Saturday to 1,722, according to state figures. That number was 1,786 on Thursday. However, there were 439 COVID patients in intensive care on Sunday, up from 435 the day before.
Sunday’s figures brought the county’s total to 1,383,186 cases and 25,071 deaths since the start of the pandemic, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
On Saturday, the department again reminded residents that those vaccinated are better protected against negative health effects if they contract the virus.
“Anyone who is not yet vaccinated should know that they do not have the same protection as those who have been vaccinated,” said Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer.
As of August 7, unvaccinated adults aged 18 to 49 were 25 times more likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19 than vaccinated adults of the same age. Meanwhile, unvaccinated adults over 50 were nearly a dozen times more likely to be hospitalized than their vaccinated counterparts, and 17 times more likely to die.
“While vaccines aren’t perfect and many of us may know someone who is fully vaccinated and has ended up contracting COVID, the three vaccines continue to do what we need most: They protect from the worst consequences of COVID-19 and allow our hospitals and clinics to continue to provide a full range of services to all those in need of health care, ”said Ferrer.
The latest figures show that 73% of county residents aged 12 and over have received at least one dose of the vaccine. Of the county’s 10.3 million people, including those too young to be eligible for vaccines, 63% have received at least one dose and 55% are fully immunized.
“With nearly 3 million LA County residents aged 12 and over still unvaccinated, our recovery journey may be in jeopardy,” she said.
Ferrer also said she expects the number of new daily cases to remain high in the coming weeks due to increased testing required at many schools and businesses.
The health department reminded residents of the need to get tested on Friday if they develop symptoms or have been exposed to the virus – even if they are fully vaccinated. These people are also expected to isolate themselves from others while awaiting test results, according to the county.
The county also urged people to cooperate with contact tracers, who contact those who test positive or have been exposed. The contact tracing process is considered crucial in identifying people who may have been exposed to the virus without their knowledge and in containing potential outbreaks. Contact tracers can also provide information about isolation and quarantine and how to access services and providers.
Contact tracer calls will display on phones as “LA Public Health” or 833-641-0305.
People who have tested positive for COVID-19 but have not received a call from contact tracers have been advised to call 833-540-0473.
