State health officials reported 475 new cases of COVID-19 for the three-day period from Saturday to Monday, continuing a trend of high transmission throughout the summer.
Two additional deaths have also been reported.
The seven-day daily average of cases now stands at 313, up from 176 two weeks ago and an average of 79 cases around the same time last month.
Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 75,856 confirmed or probable cases of COVID-19 and 932 deaths, according to data tracked by the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Cases are no longer processed on weekends, which means Tuesday’s total reflects all cases for Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
Hospitalizations had not been updated Tuesday morning, but on Monday there were 136 people in the hospital with COVID-19, including 69 in intensive care and 28 on ventilators. Hospitalizations have more than tripled in less than a month, straining Maine’s hospital system.
As for vaccinations, they have increased in recent weeks as the delta variant has spread rapidly and more employers and colleges have instituted vaccination mandates.
As of Tuesday, 844,033 final doses of vaccine had been administered, representing 62.8% of all residents of Maine and 71.3% of eligible 12 years and older.
