The death toll from COVID-19 in Cayuga County is approaching the century mark with two more deaths linked to the virus on Monday.
The Cayuga County Health Department said a 90-year-old woman and an 80-year-old man tested positive for COVID-19 and were hospitalized at the time of their deaths. No further information was released on the cases.
Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, 96 residents of Cayuga County have died from COVID-19. There were six deaths in August, the worst month for the county since the winter surge in December and January.
COVID-19 cases increased in August. There have been 706 confirmed cases, the third of all months of the pandemic. This is an increase of nearly ten times from July when there were 72 confirmed cases. As of August 2020, there were 35 cases.
With the surge in cases, there have been more hospitalizations. This trend continued on Monday, with the health department reporting 11 COVID-related patients at Auburn Community Hospital, six of whom are unvaccinated. Four of the patients are 90 years old, three are 70 years old, one is 50 years old and three are 30 years old.
Hospitalizations have not been this high in Cayuga County for nearly seven months. The total does not include residents hospitalized outside the county.
Even though the active cases slowly start to decline, new cases are being reported. The health department said there were 62 new cases admitted as of Monday, including 39 vaccinated and 23 unvaccinated. The number of active cases is 211, up slightly from 207 a day ago.
