Case

There was 49 new cases of Covid-19 linked to the Delta community outbreak announced today, all in Auckland. This brings the total number of cases to 736. Of those 720 cases are in Auckland and 16 in Wellington. To date, 11 people have recovered from this epidemic.

Of the new cases reported today, 36% were considered contagious while in the community – an increase from 25% of the 75 cases reported on Wednesday.

There are currently 42 people with Covid-19 in Auckland region hospitals. Six of them are in intensive care or long-term care units. Three are under ventilators. The youngest person in intensive care is 18, said Chief Health Officer Dr Ashley Bloomfield.

Thursday morning, 37,359 contacts were identified, 86% of these contacts having undergone at least one test.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has confirmed Northland would join the rest of the country at alert level 3 from 11:59 p.m. this evening, excluding Auckland which would remain at alert level 4.

When asked if an earlier move to Alert Level 2 for the South Island was on the table, Ardern said that was not part of the plan and that a nationwide review would take place. Monday. It comes as experts warn that a drop to alert level 2 would be risky while the Auckland epidemic remains unchecked.
