Ontario Reports 865 New Cases of COVID-19, Over Two-Thirds Among Unvaccinated People

• 540, or 67 percent, were unvaccinated.

Raw provincial immunization status data do not include age breakdowns. This, and the fact that the vaccinated and unvaccinated populations in Ontario differ significantly in both size and demographics, are important caveats to note when reviewing cases by vaccination status.

Additional cases include 158 in Toronto, 76 in York Region, 73 in Hamilton, 59 in Peel Region, 50 in Windsor-Essex, 31 in Durham Region, 30 in Middlesex-London, 29 in Halton Region and 26 in Waterloo Region.

It comes after the The province unveiled its plans for a vaccine passport yesterday. The “COVID-19 Enhanced Vaccine Certificate” system will come into effect on September 22. Initially, fully vaccinated Ontarians will need their current vaccination receipt along with a valid photo ID to dine indoors at restaurants or go to gyms and theaters. The system will require residents to be vaccinated against COVID-19 to access certain non-essential services, unless there is a medical reason why they cannot be vaccinated.

Ontario’s medical regulatory body is urging physicians to exercise good judgment in granting medical exemptions for vaccines.

Dr. Nancy Whitmore, registrar of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, says the college has heard of unfounded requests for medical exemptions before and doctors must not give in. She says there are very few legitimate medical reasons not to get the COVID-19 vaccine[FEMININE[FEMININE

They include a severe allergy or allergist-confirmed anaphylactic reaction to a previous dose of a COVID-19 vaccine or one of its components, and a diagnosis of myocarditis or pericarditis after receiving an mRNA vaccine.

New modeling suggests higher vaccination rates needed

Ontario’s COVID-19 Scientific Advisory Table also released its new modeling yesterday. It shows that 85% of the eligible population must be vaccinated to avoid containment this fall due to the highly contagious delta variant.
