There have been eight additional cases of COVID-19 in Knox County over the past day, the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported on Saturday, September 4.
And despite the growing number of cases and increasing hospitalizations statewide, some government officials are opposed to mask warrants which have been shown to reduce transmission of the virus.
Since the start of the pandemic, 1,346 Knox County residents have been diagnosed with the virus, 37 have been admitted to hospitals and seven have died. Knox County has not seen any additional hospitalizations for nearly three weeks, despite the sharp rise in cases.
Statewide, an additional 491 cases were reported in the past day. No additional deaths were reported statewide on September 4, keeping the number at 940.
Seven more people statewide were hospitalized in the last day with COVID-19, bringing that number to 2,333 since the pandemic began in Maine in mid-March 2020. The overwhelming percentage of new hospitalizations due to the virus are people who are not vaccinated.
Currently, 163 Mainers are hospitalized with the virus, 62 in intensive care units and 26 on ventilators. These numbers continue to increase.
The CDC reported on Saturday that 36 more Knox County residents were fully immunized in the past day, reaching 27,454, which represents nearly 78% of the eligible population.
Somerset County is only 57% vaccinated while Cumberland County is 84%.
Health officials continue to urge people to wear masks in indoor public places and to get vaccinated.
