NSW health officials are also concerned about the recent detection of COVID-19 fragments at the Bonny Hills sewage treatment plant in the Port Macquarie-Hastings area, where there are no known cases.

“There is an opportunity to open, but I would say it would be in a tight environment, not like the environment before the lockdown,” Barilaro said.

When asked if residents of Riverina, where there are no cases, could come out of lockdown by the weekend, Ms Berejiklian said she would make an announcement ‘by the end of it. of this week ‘based on health advice.

The Prime Minister largely avoided questions from reporters during this morning’s press conference regarding the federal government’s distribution of COVID-19 vaccines among states.

Asked what it might mean for NSW if its supply slows down, or if it had to redistribute its doses to the rest of the country, the PM said Sydney had lower vaccination rates than Melbourne when its current epidemic hit .

Nine deaths from COVID-19 have been recorded since Tuesday’s update, including a Dubbo resident and a man in his 20s. They were:

  • The man in his sixties from Dubbo, who died at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
  • A man in the 1990s from South East Sydney died at St George’s Hospital after catching the virus at the St George Aged Care Facility in Bexley, where he was residing. This is the third death linked to this establishment.
  • The man in his twenties, originally from western Sydney, died in Nepean Hospital. NSW Deputy Chief Health Officer Marianne Gale said the man was not vaccinated and had “significant” underlying health issues.

There are 1,136 COVID-19 patients currently hospitalized in NSW, including 194 in intensive care.

Meanwhile, MP Fiona Martin appeared on 2GB radio station this morning, telling her the Burwood area should be removed from a local government list of areas of concern. This follows Burwood Mayor John Faker, who asked last week why his council area – which recorded 45 new cases in the past month – should be on the list.

Over the past month, there have been 474 new cases in Sydney City and 246 in Randwick, both of which are not considered to be of concern.

“It’s very difficult to understand,” Ms. Martin said. “In Burwood, rates simply do not represent a risk to justify the [very difficult] lockdown in Burwood, especially as vaccination rates continue to rise. “

Ms Berejiklian said the comparison was made on the basis of population and that health officials were unwilling to make any adjustments that could “see a skyrocketing of cases” before an increase expected over the next week.

The Burwood Local Government Area has a population of approximately 37,000, while the population of the City of Sydney is approximately 208,000. Randwick’s population is just over 140,000 people.

Wednesday there was 221 new local cases reported in Victoria. Six people who had gathered in a Melbourne synagogue were fine for violating the public health order of the State after a day of confrontation with the police.
