Queensland Health Director Says Sunnybank COVID Cluster ‘Controlled’

Queensland authorities have declared a COVID-19 cluster linked to a Brisbane school under control, after recording just one new locally acquired case.

The 15-year-old patient is a student attending St Thomas More College in Sunnybank, which is at the center of the cluster after a student tested positive last week.

The new case tested positive while in home quarantine.

The development, which followed two cases the day before also in home quarantine, led Chief Medical Officer of Health Jeannette Young to claim that the Sunnybank cluster was “under control”.

She again praised Patient Zero’s student family for getting her tested for COVID-19 after developing a headache.

“It appears, because of the fantastic job of contact tracing and the superb job that this family has done, that we have been able to bring this outbreak under control so quickly,” said Young.

“But we know we could have a case in Queensland at any time.”

The cluster had raised fears that southeast Queensland was plunged into yet another lockdown.

It started with COVID-19 infections in two of the three men who allegedly crossed Queensland on the correct border passes as essential workers on September 5, before one of them visited the father of the first student found positive.
