State deer hunters and taxidermists can receive gift cards to help LDWF watch for chronic wasting disease
Those who wish to help will enter a competition for $ 1,000 and $ 500 gift cards when they submit a sample of an adult male harvested during the 2021-22 Louisiana deer season.
According to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, all submitted samples will be tested for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), helping the LDWF monitor this disease, which is 100% fatal in deer.
Hunters become eligible to win the $ 1,000 gift card by submitting a sample to the LDWF for testing from an adult male harvested in Louisiana during the 2021-22 deer season. Taxidermists will be entered to win the $ 500 gift card by submitting samples of mature males collected in Louisiana during the 2021-22 deer season. Both draws will take place on March 18, 2022.

LDWF says CWD is a fatal neurological disease of deer. It has not yet been detected in Louisiana. However, the three neighboring states, Texas, Arkansas and Mississippi, have reported positive tests. Continuous sampling statewide remains vitally important and LDWF is asking hunters to help, they say.
The disease is spread by contact with infected saliva, blood, urine, feces, food, water and soil. It can be transmitted from live animals or carcasses and creates holes in the brain tissue of infected animals. CWD infection can occur in deer of any sex and age, but higher rates of infection are generally seen in mature males.
Symptoms may appear 16 months or more after infection. These symptoms include weight loss, excessive salivation, grinding of teeth, shaking of the head, difficulty swallowing, excessive urination and thirst, incoordination, stance of legs apart, downcast head and ears. , staring, fainting and unconsciousness.
Before hunting deer, all deer hunters, regardless of age or license status, must obtain deer tags and have tags in their possession when hunting deer. Immediately after harvesting a deer, the hunter must tag the deer with the appropriate permit tag before it leaves the harvest site.
