The side effects of COVID booster shots generally resemble the side effects seen after a second dose of the Pfizer Where Modern vaccines or the first shot Johnson & Johnson (J&J) vaccine.
A recent study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that among the booster shots of the three vaccines distributed in the United States, the following side effects were the most common overall:
- injection site reactions
- tired
- muscle aches
While the study gives much more data on the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines – 12,000 people received either a third dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, compared to the 48 people who received two doses of the J&J vaccine – the study gave clarification of how the public responds to booster injections outside of clinical trials.
CDC said those who received three doses of Pfizer or Moderna injections had localized reactions, such as pain, itching or swelling at the injection site.
Less common side effects after the third dose of Moderna or Pfizer injections include muscle pain, fatigue, and headache. According to the CDC.
A second dose of the J&J vaccine in study participants was found to have the fewest side effects of all.
CDC study reported that only 10% of J&J beneficiaries reported side effects that prevented them from participating in their daily lives, while 28% of Moderna or Pfizer beneficiaries said the injections prevented them from going about their daily lives.
Overall, side effects were more pronounced after people took a third dose of Moderna vaccine. Half of Moderna recall recipients reported headaches and muscle pain, and 60% said they were tired.
As for the Pfizer vaccine, less than 40% of those who received the Pfizer booster reported headaches and muscle pain, and about half said they were tired.
Only about 25% of J&J booster recipients had injection site reactions, and 20% of J&J booster recipients reported headaches and muscle pain.
