Vic COVID update
The state was expected to become the first to surpass 2,000 reported cases in a single day after a record 1,965 infections on Saturday with five deaths.
Victoria is currently managing over 18,340 active cases.
Nearly 40,000 vaccines were administered statewide on Saturday, while 74,105 tests were performed.

Meanwhile, statewide tracing efforts have been scaled back to focus on positive cases and primary contacts.
Secondary close contacts will no longer be required to self-isolate, as authorities change their processes to handle the growing number of cases.
Department of Health Assistant Secretary Kate Matson said that since Victoria no longer pursues a zero COVID strategy, around 16,000 secondary contacts are allowed to leave isolation this weekend.
“In an environment where we are unfortunately close to 2000 cases per day, the risk to public health is not there in terms of secondary close contacts when weighed against the operational impact,” she said on Saturday. .
“So we want to focus our resources primarily on close contacts, confirmed cases and sensitive exposure sites.”

Primary contacts are encouraged to isolate themselves from the rest of their household and secondary contacts are encouraged to get tested if they show symptoms.
When asked if the state would reach 3,000 cases per day by the end of October, Matson told reporters on Saturday: “At the moment we are on the right track in terms of hospitalizations and the number of case.”
She said the Burnet Institute was working on new modeling, given the high number of cases, which would be released later this week.
Vaccination rates continue to rise in Victoria. As of Friday evening, 85% of those over 16 had received a dose and 57% were fully immunized.

A small number of protests took place in Melbourne on Saturday, with police arresting three people and fining 27 people for violating public health orders.
In Mildura, residents are entering day two of a seven-day lockdown to contain growing cases, with active infections in the area reaching 37.
Health officials in three states are on high alert after a Victorian flight attendant worked on Virgin return flights from Melbourne to Adelaide, Sydney and Newcastle as she was contagious from 4-6 October.
