Victoria has recorded 1,612 new COVID-19 cases and eight deaths, as trials of the state’s vaccine passport system begin.
There are now more than 19,000 active infections across the state, after 73,138 tests and 34,279 vaccinations were reported in the 24 hours to Monday. The additional deaths bring the toll of the current epidemic to 93.

Monday signals the first day regional areas will begin testing a system to check the immunization status of people wishing to visit a business.
The system will be used in Melbourne once the lockdown is lifted and businesses can reopen, with 14 regional locations participating in the lawsuit, including gyms, pubs, cafes, churches, realtors, cinemas and stores. beauticians.
Customers will be prompted to show that they are fully immunized by displaying a digital certificate through the Services Victoria app, Medicare app or smartphone wallet.

More than 4,300 people were added to the app within 10 minutes when demand peaked between 9:30 a.m. and 9:40 a.m., a state government spokesperson said.
A printed version of the certificate or immunization history can also be used as proof, or the client will be required to present valid proof of exemption.
The trials will test vaccine certification technology and train staff and business owners on how to communicate vaccine requirements to customers.
If successful, the system will be expanded so that double-vaccinated Victorians can attend the Melbourne Cup and live music within weeks.
On Sunday, the state government announced that up to 10,000 racing fans would attend the Melbourne Cup on November 2, with Oaks Day and Stakes Day being allowed crowds of similar size, if the 80% threshold of double jabs is reached.
An event will also be held at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl on October 30 to celebrate the return of live music, with thousands in attendance.
Meanwhile, a Brighton school said it would become the first in the state to use rapid antigen testing for COVID-19.
Starting Thursday, Firbank Grammar School will start using rapid tests twice a week on everyone who enters their high school.
Several schools have been added to the state’s list of exhibition sites, including Queen of Peace Parish Elementary School in Altona Meadows, Woodend Elementary School, and Victoria Virtual School in Thornbury.
