The number of recorded COVID cases in Minnesota has risen 34% in recent times – the highest growth rate in the entire United States, largely thanks to substantial increases in major counties in Minnesota.
But despite the number of COVID infections that have increased in recent times, Minnesota’s hospitalization and death rate remains low compared to other states.
The data comes from the New York Times (h / t to @twindependent on Twitter), which shows Minnesota has seen an average of 2,981 new cases of COVID every day over the past week. This represents an increase of 34% compared to 14 days ago, the most extreme jump in the whole country.

Minnesota’s case rate is also at the high end. At 53 cases per 100,000 population, only six states and Guam have higher rates.
But there is a little more to the story.
Minnesota has an average of 18 COVID hospitalizations per day over the past week, up from two weeks ago – but still tied for 15th lowest hospitalization rate among the 50 states.

In Minnesota, of the 43 counties with an increase in COVID cases above the 34% statewide rate, two are in the Twin Cities metro: Anoka has seen cases increase by 52% in the over the past two weeks, while Hennepin has seen cases increase by 35%.
But the biggest increases are seen in greater Minnesota, where vaccination rates are far lower than the 7-county Twin Cities metro, and which now records the significant majority of new COVID-19 cases in Minnesota.
