ROYAL PALM BEACH, Florida – It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a woman from Royal Palm Beach is highlighting the support available for those battling the disease.
Lorna Johnson is currently 24 years old but has been diagnosed with breast cancer twice.
“I remained in remission after my first diagnosis for 17 years,” Johnson said. “Now it’s my ninth year that it’s in remission again the second time around.”
According to the American Cancer Society, the average risk for a woman in the United States of developing breast cancer during her lifetime is approximately 13%.
This means that there is a 1 in 8 chance that they will develop breast cancer.
“It’s such a scary situation,” Johnson said. “You really don’t know what to do. “
That’s why Johnson has spent the past 20 years leading a local breast cancer support group called “Your Bosom Buddies II”.
“There are people here who have survived this disease and are thriving and doing well,” Johnson said. “We’re going to go through this together. “
Monthly meetings are usually held at Palms West Hospital in Loxahatchee, but meetings are still held virtually in the midst of the pandemic.
Your Bosom Buddies II is dedicated to raising awareness and emotional support in the community and raising funds both for its members in need and for the search for a cure for breast cancer.
Group meetings take place on the second Thursday of each month from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. via Zoom.
