A ‘super cold’ swept through the UK, with many symptomatic people describing it as ‘the worst cold ever’.
Those with symptoms may be confused as to whether it is the super cold, the flu, or Coronavirus, because the symptoms of Covid have changed over time.
At the start of the pandemic, people were told to watch for continued cough, fever, and loss of taste.

But now the symptoms can be close to the common cold, so the only way to rule out your symptoms like Covid is to get tested.
So what is the reason for this new lurgy that makes people feel uncomfortable? This morning’s resident doctor Dr Philippa Kaye explained everything you need to know, reports Wales Online.
What is the reason for the extreme cold?
Health chiefs have warned adults and children could get sick as people socialize on a large scale without any Covid restrictions, such as masks, for the first time since March 2020.
This morning, Dr Philippa Kaye confirmed this by saying: “Last year we were all at home and we were very good with our restrictions and social distancing.
“This meant that the viruses circulating could not spread everywhere.
“Now that we’ve opened up – universities, schools, hospitals and nightclubs are back – they can spread from person to person.
“It may be that for some people, for example children, who haven’t had a lot of exposure in the past, they could have last year as well as this year.”
Is it really the “worst cold in the world”?
Dr Philippa wondered why people with the disease might call it the “world’s worst cold”.
She said: “If you think about the last time you had a cold it was awhile ago, so we don’t quite remember how uncomfortable they make us.
“Second, it’s not the virus that makes you feel bad, it’s your body’s immune system.
“The natural defense system does these things to try to kill the virus. Temperature is not the virus. Temperature is your body trying to kill it.
“We just have to really take care of ourselves and make sure that for most people it will last a few days and get better.
“The best thing anyone can do this winter is if you haven’t received your Covid vaccine then please have it. If you are eligible for the flu shot go for it. too.”
Addressing the state of mind of people and the public perception of the common cold, Dr Philippa added: “We have been scared for over 18 months.
“The levels of stress and anxiety in the population have really increased.
“We have been taught to fear coughs, fear of colds, and I think that’s why so many people worry about it.
“Covid has been much more serious than this cold will be and it’s really important that we stick to the advice. “
It comes as the flu shot has been rolled out this year to people over 50, pregnant people, people with chronic health conditions and up to grade 11 in schools.
Living a healthy lifestyle and eating well can help the body stay in peak condition to avoid catching a cold.
Online trainer and former 80kg bodybuilding champion John Clarke said, “A healthy diet and a workout plan means my clients are less prone to catching a cold.
“For example, if my diet isn’t planned while I’m on vacation, I’ll get cold sores because I’m not getting enough nutrients.”
