New Brunswick reports two deaths and 87 new cases of COVID-19

HALIFAX –

New Brunswick Public Health confirmed on Friday afternoon that two more people have died from COVID-19, bringing the total of COVID-19-related deaths in the province to 84.

“Unfortunately, two other people lost their lives. We must do all we can to reduce the spread of the virus, protecting ourselves, our loved ones and our communities, ”Premier Blaine Higgs said in a statement. “It is encouraging to see that the number of New Brunswickers receiving their first and second doses of a COVID-19 vaccine continues to increase. “

A person over 90 years old who lived in zone 3 (Fredericton region) and a 70 year old person who lived in zone 4 (Edmundston region) are the most recent victims of the new coronavirus in New Brunswick.

“I offer my condolences to the two families who mourn the loss of a loved one,” said Dr. Jennifer Russell, Chief Medical Officer of Health for the province. “It is important to remember that getting vaccinated and following public health measures is our best defense against the spread of the virus. When you choose not to be vaccinated against COVID-19, you increase your risk of transmission and hospitalization.

New Brunswick has 60 people hospitalized with the virus, including 18 in an intensive care unit.

“Among those hospitalized, 31 are not vaccinated, six are partially vaccinated and 23 are fully vaccinated,” public health said in a statement. “Of the 18 in an intensive care unit, 16 are not vaccinated and two are partially vaccinated.”

Public health also reported 87 new COVID-19 cases on Friday and 124 recoveries, lowering the number of active cases to 1,064.

Of the new cases, 52 – or 60% – are not vaccinated, nine – or 10% – are partially vaccinated and 26 – or 30% – are fully vaccinated.

PROVINCE EXPANDS RAPID TEST PROGRAM

People living in circuit breaker areas who are not showing symptoms of COVID-19 will be able to pick up free rapid test kits starting Saturday.

The kits will be available at these locations from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.:

• Magic Mountain Parking Lot, 150 Magic Mountain Road, Moncton
• Perth-Andover Middle School, 20 Nissen St., Perth-Andover
• Town Hall (rear parking lot), 131, rue Pleasant, Grand-Sault

“To date, Public Health has distributed over one million rapid test kits across the province,” said Russell. “We use them in long-term care facilities and schools, and local chambers of commerce distribute them to businesses. “

The rapid test screening program is for people two years of age and older who have no symptoms and have not been identified as close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19.

“It is important that anyone with a positive result on a rapid test takes a laboratory PCR test at an assessment center to confirm the results,” said Russell.

IMMUNIZATION UPDATE

Public Health reported on Friday that 82.1 percent of eligible New Brunswickers are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and 91.2 percent have received their first dose of a vaccine.

If you have not yet received your first or second dose, you can go to a walk-in clinic or make an appointment via a participating pharmacy or to a Vitalité or Horizon health network clinic.

Eligible New Brunswickers can make their second dose appointments at least 28 days after their first dose.

CASES CONFIRMED IN SCHOOLS

Positive cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in schools in Zones 1 (Moncton region), 2 (Saint John region), 3 (Fredericton region), 4 (Edmundston region) and 5 (Campbellton region) ).

Schools have been notified and if you or a member of your family have been in close contact with a case, you will be notified by public health or the school or facility for contact tracing.

“If you are not notified directly, you have not been identified as a close contact,” Public Health said in a statement.

from New Brunswick Guidelines for healthy and safe schools states that schools with cases can close or switch to e-learning for at least one calendar day to support contact tracing, risk assessments and operational responses.

Here is a list of schools with confirmed cases:

• Zone 1 (Moncton area) – One or more new cases have been confirmed at Forest Glen School and Northrop Frye School, both located in Moncton and having already been affected.
• Zone 2 (Saint John area) – A case has been confirmed at St. Stephen High School.
• Zone 3 (Fredericton area) – A new case has been confirmed at Liverpool Street Primary School, which had previously been affected.
• Zone 4 (Edmundston region) – One or more new cases have been confirmed at Polyvalente AJ Savoie in Saint-Quentin and at École Régionale-de-Saint-André, both previously affected.
• Zone 5 (Campbellton area) – A new case has been confirmed at Sugarloaf High School in Campbellton.

As of September 7, 99 schools and 53 preschool and childcare facilities have recorded confirmed cases of COVID-19.

• 13 new cases in zone 5 (Campbellton area);

three new cases in zone 6 (Bathurst region).
