Michigan reports total of 7,505 new coronavirus cases over 2 days, 118 deaths on Friday, October 22

Michigan health officials reported a two-day total of 7,505 new confirmed coronavirus cases and 118 confirmed COVID-19 deaths for Tuesday October 19 and Wednesday October 20.

Of the newly reported deaths, 69 were late additions identified by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services during a review of vital records, meaning they likely occurred outside of the dates reported today.

Over the past seven days, Michigan has recorded an average of 3,301 cases and 43 deaths per day. The seven-day average of cases had declined for four consecutive reporting periods dating back to October 22. The weekly average reported on Monday was 3,638 reported cases and 37 new confirmed deaths per day.

Since the start of the pandemic, 1,097,129 coronavirus cases have been reported and 21,744 confirmed deaths. Additionally, the state has reported 140,716 probable cases and 1,429 probable deaths, in which a doctor and / or antigen test found it to be COVID-19, but no confirmatory PCR test, which detects the presence of ‘virus, has been carried out.

State data shows that 63.5% of eligible residents received at least a single dose of COVID-19 vaccine. So far, 59% of the population is fully vaccinated. These numbers remained stable last week.

As of Friday, October 22, hospitals in the state were treating 2,197 adult patients with confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19 and 35 children. There were 572 patients in intensive care, including 307 on ventilators.

Of the 88,976 diagnostic tests processed between Monday and Tuesday, 10.6% were positive. There were 261,803 tests processed between Friday October 15 and Thursday October 21, of which 11.4% came back positive.

Every county in Michigan has reported at least one new case of COVID-19. Wayne County led the state, with 928 new cases, followed by Kent County (665), Oakland County (609), Macomb County (605) and Genesee County (302) .

Houghton County leads the state in new cases per capita, with 232.9 cases per 100,000 population.

Forty-nine of Michigan’s 83 counties have reported at least one new death. Wayne County led the state with 14 deaths, followed by 10 in Oakland County, nine in Macomb County and seven in Kent County. Four deaths have been recorded in Calhoun, Eaton, Genesee and Kalamazoo counties.

The daily average of reported COVID deaths in Michigan has been increasing since August, which could be expected as the trends in deaths generally follow the trends of cases by a few weeks.

The average exceeded 30 deaths per day in late September, marking the highest level since early June. For context, the entire month of July was passed to single digits, and the peak of the outbreak in late 2020 was more than 110 deaths per day.
