Michigan reports 3-day total of 7,856 new coronavirus cases, 56 deaths on Monday, October 25

Michigan health officials reported a two-day total of 7,856 new confirmed cases of coronavirus and 56 confirmed deaths from COVID-19 for Tuesday, October 19 and Wednesday, October 20.

Of the newly reported deaths, 29 were late additions identified by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services during a review of vital records, meaning they likely occurred outside of the dates reported today.

Over the past seven days, Michigan has recorded an average of 3,209 cases and 44 deaths per day. The seven-day average of cases had declined for five consecutive reporting periods dating back to October 22. The weekly average reported for Monday, October 18 was 3,638 reported cases and 37 new confirmed deaths per day.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 1,104,634 reported coronavirus cases and 21,862 confirmed deaths. Additionally, the state has reported 142,389 probable cases and 1,447 probable deaths, in which a doctor and / or antigen test found it to be COVID-19, but no confirmatory PCR test, which detects the presence of ‘virus, has been carried out.

State data shows that 63.5% of eligible residents received at least a single dose of COVID-19 vaccine. So far, 59% of the population is fully vaccinated.

As of Monday, October 25, hospitals in the state were treating 2,215 adult patients with confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19 and 41 children. There were 581 intensive care patients, 313 of whom were on ventilators.

Of the 101,157 diagnostic tests processed between Friday, October 22 and Sunday, 11% were positive.

There were 252,916 tests processed between Monday October 18 and Sunday October 24, of which 11.4% came back positive.

Algiers County is the only county in Michigan to record zero new cases of COVID-19 since Friday. Wayne County led the state, with 1,116 new cases, followed by Oakland County (823), Macomb County (813), Kent County (630) and Genesee County (275 ).

Keweenaw County leads the state in the number of new cases per capita, with 293.3 cases per 100,000 population.

Thirty-five of Michigan’s 83 counties have reported at least one new death. Oakland County led the state with seven deaths, followed by five in Wayne County, four in Macomb County, three deaths in each of Clinton, Genesee and Washtenaw counties.

The daily average of reported COVID deaths in Michigan has been increasing since August, which could be expected as the trends in deaths generally follow the trends of cases by a few weeks.

The average exceeded 30 deaths per day in late September, marking the highest level since early June. For context, the entire month of July was passed to single digits, and the peak of the outbreak in late 2020 was more than 110 deaths per day.
