New brain therapy approved by the NHS to help people with depression and anxiety

People with anxiety and depression in Leicestershire who do not respond to talk therapy or antidepressants may be prescribed a newly approved NHS magnetic technique.

The Leicestershire Health Partnership’s acute recovery team has started a new treatment that stimulates certain areas of the brain using an “intense magnetic field” at Glenfield Hospital.

The treatment, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (RTMS), is performed while the patient is fully awake and reading or listening to their favorite music.

The procedure is painless and uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the area of your brain involved in controlling mood.

The new technique has shown reduced side effects compared to antidepressants.

Fiona Myers, acting division director of the partnership, said the treatment was an example of “high quality” and “innovative” patient care.

She said: “The launch of the RTMS service is a great example of how the Leicestershire Health Partnership (LPT) team is actively advancing in providing innovative and high quality care to our patients.

“This is a real testament to our staff’s commitment to improving the choice of treatment options for our patients.

“In addition, the successful achievement of accreditation for the electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) service is fabulous and the staff deserve a big thank you for all of their efforts.

The Bradgate Unit Neuromodulation Center team worked with an organization in Northampton to develop the ‘excellent’ treatment pathway.

The center now offers the treatment alongside vagus nerve stimulation, involves the use of a device to stimulate the vagus nerve with electrical impulses, and ECT, where brief electrical stimulation of the brain occurs while the patient is under anesthesia.

They are currently working on an Esketamine nasal spray, a treatment choice for people who are resistant to depression medication.
