COVID-19 misinformation disseminated by some healthcare professionals remains a problem

Physicians, residents and medical students who are members of the American Medical Association’s (AMA) House of Delegates have taken a stand against COVID-19 misinformation by adopting a new policy that will tackle lies about the coronavirus.

The move comes in response to a small but dangerous number of doctors, nurses and other medical professionals who continue to spread lies about COVID-19. Their remarks include endorsing unproven treatments and disregarding safety protocols such as vaccines and mandatory masks.

“Doctors are among the most trusted sources of information and advice for patients and the general public, which is why it is so dangerous for a doctor or other healthcare professional to spread misinformation,” WADA Board Member Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, MD, MPH, said in a Press release.

The new policy will require WADA to work with healthcare companies and relevant stakeholders to tackle this dishonesty that is undermining healthcare. Additionally, WADA’s plans are researching this misinformation, its impact on public health, and other ways to eliminate it.

This policy is one of many efforts led by WADA. In addition, the association also wrote to the CEOs of major tech companies in December 2020, urging them not to promote false information on their sites.

“As misinformation has become widespread during the COVID-19 pandemic, we know that unscientific claims are being made about other health issues and other public health initiatives are being undermined,” Ehrenfeld said. “We are committed to doing all we can to stop the spread of disinformation and provide accurate, evidence-based information – the lives of our patients and the public depend on it. “
