Coronavirus in Oregon: Cases climb as state reports 1,352 new infections, 16 deaths

Oregon health officials announced 1,352 new coronavirus Friday cases and 16 deaths linked to COVID-19[female[feminine.

The number of cases was greatest number of infections reported in a single day since Oct. 28 and reflected the fourth consecutive day of an increase in the number of cases.

It’s too early to tell if the increase in the number of cases means there is a post-Thanksgiving increase in the works.

That’s because the increase in the number of cases could be the result of people being tested before and after the holidays, as a precautionary measure, said Peter Graven, COVID-19 analyst at Oregon Health & Science University. Although such tests detect real infections, they are less likely to be serious.

By the end of next week, the full picture should be clear. A real rise in infections is expected to lead to an increase in hospitalizations, which is expected to occur by the end of next week for people who fell ill during the holidays, Graven said.

The drop in cases during Thanksgiving week reflected a drop in testing and reporting, Oregon Health Authority epidemiologist Dr. Dean Sidelinger said in a statement.

“If there was an increase in transmission associated with Thanksgiving, we would expect to see these cases in the reported numbers over the coming week,” Sidelinger said.

There is certainly a risk that people will spread COVID-19 to each other while on vacation. According to a COVID-19 pandemic forecast Graven published Thursday, Oregon residents said they spent significantly more time socializing indoors during Thanksgiving week than in previous weeks, paving the way for potential exhibits.

“People were spending more time with people indoors,” Graven said. “It certainly produces the environment where we could have more transmissions.”

But it seems unlikely that an increase in cases after Thanksgiving will turn into an increase, Graven said. On the one hand, so many people have been vaccinated or got sick with COVID-19 that the virus has far fewer people to infect than just a few months ago, before the delta surge, Graven said.

Second, Thanksgiving exhibits could cause a “one-time shock to the system” from cases contracted over the holidays – not enough to fuel a real surge as people begin to minimize social interactions inside again.

“That, in and of itself, is not going to generate an increase,” Graven said.

Oregon has now averaged about 850 cases per day over the past week, well below the peak of over 2,300 recorded in early September.

Who is dead: Oregon’s 5,228th coronavirus-related death is an 82-year-old woman from Multnomah County who tested positive on October 1 and died on October 10 at her residence.

The 5,229th death is a 69-year-old man from Lane County who tested positive on October 12 and died on October 24 at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center in Riverbend.

Oregon’s 5,230th death is a 45-year-old Washington County woman who tested positive on October 2 and died on October 4 at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center.

The 5,231st death is an 88-year-old Washington County woman who tested positive on October 3 and died on October 19 at the Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital.

The 5,232nd Oregon death is a 72-year-old woman from Josephine County who tested positive on September 2 and died on October 25 at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center.

The 5,233rd death is in a 75-year-old Washington County man who tested positive on September 5 and died on October 26 at Portland VA Medical Center.

The 5,234th Oregon death is a 61-year-old man from Multnomah County who tested positive on September 21 and died on October 15 at Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center.

The 5,235th death is an 85-year-old man from Crook County who tested positive on November 2 and died on October 27 at his residence.

The 5,236th death from Oregon is a 66-year-old man from Union County who tested positive on November 30 and died on November 30 at his residence.

The 5,237th death is a 96-year-old woman from Umatilla County who tested positive on November 3 and died on November 21 at her residence. She had no underlying condition.

Oregon’s 5,238th death is a 79-year-old woman from Multnomah County who tested positive on Nov. 22 and died Nov. 22 at Adventist Health Portland.

The 5,239th death is a 75-year-old woman from Linn County who tested positive on November 23 and died on December 1 at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital.

Oregon’s 5,240th death is a 77-year-old Jackson County woman who tested positive on Nov. 22 and died Dec. 1 at Providence Medford Medical Center.

The 5,241st death is a 71-year-old man from Grant County who tested positive on November 25 and died on November 28 at his residence.

Oregon’s 5,242nd death is a 58-year-old Coos County woman who died on December 2 at her residence.

Unless otherwise noted, all had underlying health issues, or the state was confirming if they had any.

Hospitalizations: 397 people with confirmed cases of COVID-19 are hospitalized, 13 more than Thursday. That includes 94 people in intensive care, up four from Thursday.

Vaccines: 3,187 people have been reported newly vaccinated since Thursday.

From the beginning : Oregon has reported 394,569 confirmed or suspected infections and 5,243 deaths, among the lowest per capita numbers in the country. To date, the State reported 6,159,265 doses of vaccine administered, fully immunizing 2,673,871 people and partially immunizing 284,475 people.
