ROANOKE, Virginia (WDBJ) – This is National influenza immunization week.
The Virginia Department of Health reminds Virginians that it’s not too late to get a flu shot if you need it.
VDH health officials say influenza activity is on the rise this year in Virginia compared to last year, and we haven’t even hit the peak of the season yet.
The peak of the flu season is usually in January or February and continues until May, which means there is still time to get the vaccine.
“It usually takes about two weeks for your body’s immune system to read the vaccine and really build its immune system to the level of the vaccine you want. This is why we usually say that it is best to get the vaccine at the very beginning of the flu season, that way you are protected as much as possible during the flu season … that being said, the vaccine against the flu will protect you as long as the flu virus is circulating, ”said Lisa Sollot, respiratory illness coordinator at VDH.
Anyone six months and older can get the flu shot.
Health officials say you can get the flu and COVID-19 shots at the same time or if you just got your COVID-19 shot, you don’t have to wait to get the flu shot.
