UK records 50,867 Covid cases and 148 deaths when plan B is triggered

he UK faced 50,867 others Covid cases and 148 deaths Thursday.

Separate figures released by the Office for National Statistics show that there are now 171,000 registered deaths in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

A total of 51,183,457 first doses of the Covid-19 vaccine had been delivered to the UK as of December 8, according to government figures. This is an increase of 21,700 from the previous day.

Some 46,640,237 second doses were delivered, an increase of 29,437.

A combined total of 21,715,504 booster and third dose doses were also administered, a daily increase of 414,645.

New measures have been put in place to combat the spread of the Omicron variant.

Plan B is bringing masks back to more indoor environments, working from home, and will introduce the use of Covid passes.

Concerns have grown around the Omicron variant and Sajid Javid has warned that cases of the new variant could exceed 1 million by the end of December.

Downing Street has warned that there could be “serious” consequences in terms of hospital admissions and death if Plan B measures are not implemented.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesperson said: “We believe that it is the right measures that will slow growth. I will not comment on the decisions or the motives when members vote, it would not be for me.

“But I would just like to stress that we know, and the advice we have received, is ineffective – given the incredibly rapid rate of growth of this variant – the consequences, in terms of hospitalizations and death, could be serious.

“Since we know that boosters offer a level of protection – and potentially a significant level of protection – it’s only responsible for providing that extra time to protect more people. “

Asked during a Royal Society of Medicine webinar on how the pandemic could play out over the next two years, Professor Edmunds said: “I think we are definitely not out of the woods.

“Over the next couple of months we’re going to see a really pretty big Omicron wave that will result in a lot of hospitalizations and unfortunately a lot of deaths. I’m pretty sure of it.

Travel restrictions will still be reviewed before December 20 despite the introduction of Plan B.
